Fireworks Night & Pet Anxiety: Calming Products & Desensitisation Tips

Publish on: Oct 26, 2018

We offer a variety of products to help your pets cope with the fear and anxiety that can be caused by fireworks.

Here’s a summary of what is available to you without prescription.

If you know your pet is very frightened by fireworks, it might be more appropriate to prescribe him or her a sedative for fireworks night. If in doubt, make an appointment with one of our vets.

Next year, why not start early with a programme of desensitisation, to prevent the need for calming or sedative products? Ask to see one of our Behaviour trained vets or nurses for further information.

Why choose Calmex?

  • Calmex for dogs is a capsule which can be opened and mixed with food or given whole to your dog.
  • Calmex for cats is a liquid which can be administered directly into your cat’s mouth or mixed with food.
  • Designed for one-off or short-term stressful situations, such as fireworks.
  • Given 30-60 minutes before the desired effect is required, with at least 4-6 hours between feeds. Can be given twice in 24 hours if needed.

ADAPTIL- Dogs only

Mother dogs communicate with their puppies using natural “comforting messages” released from the mammary area, scientifically called Dog Appeasing Pheromones. They are odourless and are only perceived by dogs.  These “comforting messages” provide a strong signal of comfort and security to the puppies but also have the same effect on dogs of all ages.  Adaptil is a form of these pheromones.

Why choose Adaptil tablets?

  • Fast calming effect in case of loud noises.
  • Give the tablets 2 hours before the beginning of the event
  • Palatable tablets
  • Give with or without food

  • 1 collar provides 4 weeks constant support

FELIWAY – Cats only

When comfortable and happy, cats mark their territory as familiar by rubbing their face against corners, furniture, people or other cats at home. By doing this, they release a pheromone, or “happy message”. When present in the environment, these “happy messages” provide reassurance to all cats. Feliway is a form of these pheromones.
