Advanced Medicine

Our advanced medicine service allows for more in-depth investigation of complex medical conditions, and up-to-date knowledge of treatment options for a variety of conditions.  If your pet is unwell, our vets will assess them and agree on a diagnostic plan with you. Further investigations may involve consultation with team members with advanced medical knowledge and training, to help ensure the best outcome for your pet.

“Despite the bad press that vets often are given my passion in the industry is to make sure the public know that we become vets for our love of animals and our drive to treat them as best as we are able and to always do what is best for the animal.”

Advanced medicine at Shepton and Wells Vets

  • Thorough consultations: When your pet is ill, no matter which vet you see, we aim to take a detailed history and perform a thorough clinical examination, to help us identify the problem and decide on the best course of action, whether it is trial treatment, hospitalisation or further investigation.

  • Comprehensive care: Our team regularly consult together on clinical cases and can draw on each others’ knowledge and experience to help guide our investigation and treatment plan.

  • Advanced knowledge: We can arrange for our patients to see the most appropriate team member, often with advanced qualifications. This means that many complex investigations and treatment plans can be carried out locally, in one of our clinics and with staff that you recognise, rather than having to refer elsewhere to a specialist facility.

  • Detailed diagnostics: Our in-house lab and diagnostic imaging facilities allow for a thorough and detailed work-up of medical cases, allowing for a streamlined process and a clear plan of action.

An ever increasing range of diagnostic equipment has allowed us to expand our medical capabilities and has been invaluable in allowing us to offer a more comprehensive service for your pets. Such equipment includes:

  • Flexible endoscope and bronchoscope
  • Rigid rhinoscope/cystoscope/arthroscope
  • Laparoscope
  • Digital radiography
  • Ultrasound
  • In house microscope for sample analysis/cytology
  • In house lab machines for same day blood results
  • Routine equipment such as BP monitor and urine analysis

Whist there is considerable overlap between body systems, investigations and treatments are commonly performed for the following:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders – chronic vomiting/diarrhoea; removal of objects in the stomach using the endoscope
  • Respiratory conditions – coughing, nasal disease
  • Urinary tract disorders – kidney disease, bladder disorders, incontinence
  • Endocine disorders – Diabetes, Cushings, Thyroid problems
  • Liver and pancreatic diseases
  • Haematological and Autoimmune disorders – Clotting disorders, anaemia, immune mediated inflammation (including spinal and joint inflammation)
  • Fever of unknown cause and general malaise
  • Oncological disorders
  • Cardiac disease – See cardiology

“Really friendly and helpful staff on the front desk. Clean and pleasant waiting area. Vet we saw, Adam, was extremely kind and efficient and caring. He answered our questions very patiently.”
