Calving and Down Cow First Aid Training Recap

Calving and Down Cow First Aid Training

At Shepton Vets, we are committed to equipping farmers with the knowledge and skills they need to provide the best care for their livestock. Recently, we hosted a highly successful and informative training day focused on “Calving and Down Cow First Aid.” This course encompassed a combination of theory and practical sessions designed to empower farmers to manage calving cows and downed animals with confidence. Here we will take you through the key topics all of which were covered during the training day. From understanding the best practices around calving and bull selection to learning the correct time for intervention and hands-on techniques to assist with calving, we have delved into the essential aspects of cow care.

Calving Care: Ensuring Smooth Deliveries

During the course, we focused on the critical period around calving, as it is often when we encounter the most challenges. Our discussions encompassed ensuring our cows are in optimal condition and in suitable environments to minimize complications during calving. Topics included bull selection, accurate calving dates through PDing cows, and effective transition cow management.

Timely Intervention: Identifying the Right Time to Act

A significant aspect of the training covered the appropriate timing for intervention. Through a checklist of indicators, participants learned when intervention is necessary, leading us to the practical segment of the course. We utilized our calving simulator to practice the successful delivery of calves, mastering the art of manipulation.

Down Cow Management: Diagnosing and Treating Common Issues

The afternoon session concentrated on common reasons cows go down, where we discussed differential diagnoses and their corresponding symptoms to enhance accurate diagnosis. We then delved into the proper treatment methods and emphasized the importance of excellent nursing, focusing on factors such as bedding, nutrition, hydration, and appropriate medication.

Hands-On Learning: Mastering Intra Venous Medicines Administration

The practical aspect in the afternoon was dedicated to perfecting the technique of administering Intra Venous Medicines. Participants had the opportunity to practice on simulated jugular veins, honing their skills in this crucial procedure.

Engaging and Informative: A Productive Training Day

The training day fostered thought-provoking discussions, with participants contemplating how they can implement the knowledge gained on their own farms. Farmers particularly enjoyed the hands-on activities, keeping everyone engaged, and making the day pass swiftly.

Empowering Farmers: Building Confidence in Cow Care

By the end of the course, we aimed for participants to feel confident in managing cows around calving, knowing when and how to intervene effectively and when to seek veterinary assistance. For the care of Down Cows, our key take-home message emphasized prompt and appropriate treatment coupled with excellent nursing, providing the best chance for the cow’s recovery.

Conclusion: A Vital Course for Cow Health and Well-being

Calving can be a stressful time, but with the right intervention, both the calf and cow’s outcomes can significantly improve. This course proved essential as it addressed the most problematic period in cow care, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to handle sick and recumbent animals effectively, ultimately increasing their chances of recovery.
