Martin Law

Veterinary surgeon

Small animal director

Martin always loved animals, growing up and going to school right here in Shepton Mallet. After studying at the University of Bristol, he came back to become a vet.

He is proud of Shepton Vets being independent and having a team that truly cares about local pets. He remembers visiting the practice as a student and it was the same then!

Now, he is the Small Animal Director, Martin helps run the practice and performs surgeries at both Shepton and Wells.

Martin has strong beliefs in making sure pets in his community have the care they need at affordable prices. His skills often mean we offer surgeries to our clients that they wouldn’t get elsewhere within the area.

Where did I go to school?

Wells Central School and then Wells Blue School (GCSE and A-level)

University of Bristol

What accomplishments am I most proud of?

The renovation of Shepton vets in 2013, opening the Wells practice in 2018 and achieving the certificate in small animal surgery in 2021

A memorable or heartwarming experience I’ve had with a patient or client?

Clementine the Scotty puppy.  She had a persistent right aortic arch – an anatomical variation where blood adult and foetal blood vessels around the heart constrict the oesophagus, therefore not allowing food to go down.  The owner wanted us to try and so we performed open chest surgery, identified, ligated and cut one of the foetal blood vessels and relieved the constriction.  With tremendous care by the owner Clementine has gone on to lead a normal life, which would not have otherwise been possible

What animals do I have at home?

Fox Red Labrador (Ember), 1 elderly cat (Parker), 1 tortoise I inherited from my grand-parents when they passed away (Voldetort), several chickens  and 1 tropical fish tank

Hobbies or interests outside of work?

Following Everton FC and on a local level regularly watching Yeovil Town FC at Huish Park with the whole family. I enjoy the occasional round of golf and open water swimming, previously having swum several charity swims (around Brownsea Island and over to the Isle of Wight), and playing 6-aside football. Generally now I enjoy watching my 3 kids do all the things that I used to enjoy when I was their age – any sport involving a ball.
