Veterinary Care Assistant

We’re looking for an experienced, Level 2 qualified Veterinary Care Assistant to join our friendly and supportive team, working across both our Shepton Mallet and Wells practices.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic and caring VCA who is passionate about animal welfare, enjoys being part of a busy veterinary team and takes pride in providing exceptional care to patients and clients.

The role

As a Veterinary Care Assistant, you’ll play an important role in the day-to-day running of our practices, working closely with our vets, nurses and wider support team to ensure our patients receive the highest standard of care.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Delivering exceptional care to our patients and clients, helping to create a welcoming, compassionate and professional experience.
• Supporting our veterinary and nursing teams with surgeries, procedures and the day-to-day care of patients.
• Monitoring and caring for pets throughout their time with us, including walking, toileting, feeding and ensuring they are comfortable and settled.
• Assisting with the preparation and cleaning of clinical areas, equipment and kennels to maintain excellent hygiene and infection-control standards.
• Supporting the smooth running of the practice and helping the clinical team and admin team wherever required.

Hours & salary

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week role, with a mixture of shifts between 8am and 7pm.

The role also includes working every other Sunday, 9am–1pm, with time back in lieu during the week.

Salary is dependent on age, experience and qualifications.

Client Care Team Members

Would you like to be part of a progressive, independently owned veterinary practice with over 100 years of history and an exciting future ahead?

Due to continued expansion, and with the exciting move into our new hospital on the horizon, we are looking for two enthusiastic, experienced and service-driven individuals to join our busy Small Animal Reception Team.

These roles would suit someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, is able to multitask effectively, has an excellent telephone manner and is passionate about delivering exceptional client service and animal care.

We are offering two part-time positions of 25 hours per week, covering a variety of weekday shifts, with additional weekend work on a rota basis. There may also be occasional opportunities to provide reception cover at our Wells branch.

We welcome applications from candidates with either previous veterinary reception experience or relevant customer service experience.

Weekend Working / Bank Holiday

• Saturday and Sunday shifts: Additional hours on a 1-in-11 rota
• Saturday-only shifts: Additional hours on a 1-in-5 rota
• Bank Holiday shifts: Shared equally between the team – 1 annually on average  

Candidates must be available to work both Saturday and Sunday shifts as part of the rota as well as Bank Holidays where required.

Main Duties

As a member of our Small Animal Reception Team, your responsibilities will include:

• Welcoming clients and their pets into the practice and providing a warm, professional first point of contact
• Processing payments and invoices following consultations
• Dispensing and handing over prescribed medication and tablets
• Answering telephone calls as part of our dedicated telephony team
• Booking appointments and assisting with the organisation of the surgery diary
• Providing general administrative support to the Small Animal Department
• Updating and maintaining accurate computerised client records
• Maintaining a clean, tidy and welcoming reception and waiting room environment
• Providing excellent customer service to clients and ensuring their needs are met wherever possible

The Role

As Farm Practice Manager, you will work closely with the Directors, veterinary team and farm office staff to ensure the smooth, efficient and compliant operation of the farm practice. You will lead operational improvements, support strategic projects, and help foster a positive, high-performing culture across the team.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with the Directors to deliver strategic projects and support business growth.
• Manage farm office operations, including rotas, holidays, CPD, compliance and audits.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding and development of the farm office team.
• Maintain policies, procedures and regulatory standards across the practice.
• Monitor KPIs, produce management reports and turn insights into action.
• Improve systems and workflows through effective use of technology and AI.

About You

You will be a confident, highly organised manager who combines strong people leadership with sound commercial judgement. Comfortable balancing day-to-day priorities with longer-term goals, you will bring a practical, collaborative and solutions-focused approach.

Experienced Farm Veterinary Surgeon

You will join a well‑established team of 12 farm vets, supported by 4 Veterinary Technicians/ATTs, with excellent clinical, technical and administrative backup.

The role offers a varied and rewarding caseload with a strong emphasis on dairy cattle work.
