Top tips for cooling dogs down in hot weather

Sadly we often see distressing cases of heatstroke in dogs through the summer months when our unpredictable British weather suddenly decides to spring a hot spell on us!  Here are a few of our favourite top tips on how to keep your dog cool in the heat:

1) Have a fan or two to hand for instant cool air circulation in the house.

2) Open some windows as even a light breeze will send some fresh air through your home.

3) Avoid leaving your dog in a suntrap such as a conservatory, greenhouse or a tent.

4) Never leave your dog in a parked car on a hot day, even if windows are left open.

5) Make sure they always have access to a cool shaded place.

6) Change drinking water regularly and even add a few ice cubes to freshen it. Dogs will often enjoy crunching these cubes too!

7) Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day.

9) Always take some water with you for them to drink on walks or find a cool stream to paddle in.

10) Avoid long car journeys where possible but if they are necessary, allow plenty of breaks and use air con or open windows.

11) We love the idea of a cool gel mat or wet t shirt to cool dogs with a heavy coat.

12) Spraying your dog with a cool hose, providing a paddling pool or finding a safe lake for swimming in, can all be fun and interactive for you and your dog.

14) Long-haired dogs are more likely to be affected by the heat than those with short coats, so think about getting your dog a trim before the summer months.

15) Ensure your dog has cooled down and stopped panting after a walk before offering them food.
